    The brush in this tutorial is not compatible with 25.9.1 verson of PS (Windows 11). I'd hesitate to shell out big bucks when they could be unusable.

    Just a minor suggestion. The two bright light sources in the back, (window and door), are, to my view, quite distracting. I find that bright areas like this distract the viewer from the subject. The door can be easily cropped out and the window shade could be closed; or, you could alter your angle of view to subject to the left, thereby eliminating both of these distractions.

    Wouldn't be the best option, instead of using a lightbox, using a color corrected flash unit with a white acrylic in fornt of it, as a light souurce and just shoot it with flash instead of continuous?

    Great video. One question. There are two options in 16 bit when you import the pictures in camera raw - sRGB 16bit and Adobe RGB 1998 16 bit. I have been using sRGB 16 bit. Do I lose out on these shades of grey if I don't use Adobe RGB?

    Good video! I’ve been scanning this way for a while, but wanted to see if you had found a good solution for newton rings. You mentioned that you would discuss it later in the video, but didn’t get back to it. Also wanted to point out, when you invert the tone curve and adjust the sliders, the Whites slider now adjusts blacks, Blacks slider adjusts whites, Highlights adjusts shadows, and Shadows adjusts highlights (and as you noted, the sliders need to move the opposite way to make the expected adjustment).

    I had never thought about using HDR since the range of film is well within the range of current DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. I did not know that the final DNG file was greater than 14 bit. One thing that I try to do is push the exposure fairly high ('over expose') so that the dark (silver rich) areas on negatives will have as much data (bits) as possible. Does that make sense?

  • @MLGochnauer
    @MLGochnauer 26 днів тому

    Negative Supply has great products, but the cost can add up pretty quickly if you have used a variety film formats. For most of us there are perfectly fine alternatives. . . . For someone with an enlarger, the negative carriers will often work well on top of a light source for digital 'scanning'. 4x5 enlargers are particularly good because of the size of the carriers. Enlargers themselves can sometimes be converted to copy stands with a little ingenuity. The light sources can be used, as well, if they can be set to point upward from the baseboard. (Cold light and LED heads are most likely to 'stand on their heads'.) For day to day 35mm 'scanning' the Nikon ES-2 system works well with their FF macro lenses. There are numerous Chinese versions that are probably okay too, and in the height of the films days the big names often had slide/negative duplicator attachments for their macro bellows. And a number of companies that made camera accessories produced 'slide duplicators' with specialized optics. And there was the high end Bowens Illumitran that used a built in flash.

      Wouldn't be the best option, instead of using a lightbox, using a color corrected flash unit with a white acrylic in fornt of it, as a light souurce and just shoot it with flash instead of continuous? also, as you mentioned the negatve carriers of all sizes from enlargers solve the problem of keepinf the film flat and adust to whatever negative size.

    This is savage content Joel Thanks. 20 Years ago I bought a Fujigilm 6250 drum scanner to get decent scans of 5x4 film. Been away from photography 10 years now but missed it so during COVID I spontaneously bought a GFX and I haven't looked back. But here's the thing my teenage daughter randomly fell in love with the look of film having brought some disposable film cameras to parties and gigs and now she's moved onto the Kodak Ektar. As you can imagine I'm delighted with her interest and with a birthday coming up I'm looking at other film cameras but I know that increasingly getting her work into a digital workflow will be problematic as I like you despise flatbed scanners. Even the best of them from Scitex were only ok and the only half decent one was the FujiFilm C-550 Lanovia Scanner. I've seen people shoot negs with high res sensors but that set up you have put together is sweet. I've upgraded to the GFX 100 II now which should knock it out of the park but the light panel is a great heads up and the key to it all. Good call from your son starting the ball rolling - It's great when the share your passion and thanks again for super content. Navajo images are outstanding at that scale!

    It should be automatic is a not a true explanation. I have a canon r6 with Godox AD 200 and Canon 6D with Godox V1. A big in investment. The r6 gives more more trouble than the 6D:::Syncing the camera and strobe is a nightmare and the r6 camera continues bounce off the HSS capability to not allow me to shoot at 1/1000 f/1.4 - stoping it at 1/200…this absolutely a problem in the middle of portrait session. There is no one that has clearly explained HSS process of the camera: speedlight function, second curtain…it’s a pain.

    "Don't ever let your colorblindness keep you from chasing your dream." <- That teacher of yours was a treasure and I hope you stayed in touch. I was really big into 3D art on high school. I loved movies with digital ships and characters. I wanted to be an VFX artist. Then they confirmed my colorblindness in the driving school test. It crushed my world. I did not have a teacher like that. I went for other hobbies, mostly music (but you can get only so far when starting so late). Now at 33 I went back to the 3D stuff, just accepting I won't make a penny out of that hobby. Also I bought a camera (and I'm having awful struggle with white balance, lol), but you know. It is what it is. And the older I get, the more I value any passion as a concept. We lose so mch of it as life goes by. So be thankful for that amazing teacher. ❤

    Thanks for the informative video! Part of this process is to have a computer and monitor that supports 10 bit per channel colour output, and wide colour gamet. Not all monitors are created equal. You need a graphics card that supports 10 bit output over display port. And a monitor that can output nearly 100% or at least 97% Adobe RGB - Eizo, Dell, NEC and Ben Q all have options. No monitor, from the last time I researched can output ProPhoto RGB colour space. A classic example of this as you said is “ pushing” greys or skies too much and producing banding (loosing file information). This can be clearly seen on this type of system. I too agree, forgetting to reset Photoshop working colour space after an update has caught me a few times also.

    I saw the ads for this guy’s tutorial videos. I thought he must be good. I had no idea he was such a poor presenter and his videos would lack editing. He stumbles over simple terms and words. It’s like he’s trying to remember what he was just shown, and doesn’t really know the technique at all. What was that notification that pops up too! Audio quality is very poor too; is that aircon hissing in the background? Quite a revelation. Do yourselves a favor and search for frequency separation that uses the Median filter, and has a solarized layer to aid visualizing where to edit.
